Over the summer of 2008, my coach decided to move to Cascade Elite Gymnastics. He has coached me through level 4-7 and I wanted to stay with him, so I decided to make the move with him to continue my gymnastics career. At first it was tough going from 12 hours a week to 20 hours a week of practice. I also had to change my school schedule from six classes a day to five so I could make it to my new gym. It takes me an hour by bus to get there, which is cool because I can get my homework done before practice. Giving up electives like choir and playing basketball for my school were sacrifices that were hard to make but definitely worth it in the long run. I enjoy the challenge of increasing my workouts, learning new skills and meeting new friends.

Going from compulsory to optional is a big step in a gymnast’s career. There are a lot of new skills to learn along with brutal strength and conditioning. Since I’ve been training at Cascade Elite, I have learned about 15 new skills. The skills I enjoy the most are front fulls on floor, dislo to handstand on rings, sukahara vaults, and my double back dismounts off rings and high bar.

My season started off a little rough but eventually picked up. At the beginning of the season I started having back problems. I had no idea what was wrong but with some hard work and physical therapy it healed in time for competition. Stanford and P.C.C were the toughest meets. My home meets were pretty relaxed. After my meet at Stanford and P.C.C I stayed to watch the college teams, it was fun and inspiring to watch. One day I would love to compete on a college team like that. Right now our team is in a mid season slump and we are working our best to improve our skills and scores for State in two weeks.

One of my goals this year is to qualify to Nationals. Seeing other gymnasts like me around the country would be an exciting experience.
